Phthalates are various esters of Phthalic acid which is commonly used as plasticizers in products ranging from children’s toys to electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). Phthalates are easily released into the environment and became irreversible pollutant which harm the human health. Potential health hazards of these phthalates brought this category into Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliance.
Phthalate Analysis
The phthalates added are commonly used as plasticizers to soften PVC and vinyl insulation on electrical wires, including diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), benzylbutyl phthalate (BBP), and bis(2ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). Phthalates are also regulated for use in children’s toys and childcare articles under Registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemicals (REACH) as three additional phthalates: dinoctyl phthalate (DNOP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP), and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP).
